Description
9 Melville Street is a substantial house built around 1830 to 1840, featuring three storeys and constructed of yellow brick. The ground floor is stuccoed with banded rustication. The gable end slate roof has eaves that are concealed by a stucco blocking course and cornice. Above the ground floor, there is a cornice. The house has three recessed sash windows with later glazing bars, each surrounded by stucco architraves, block sills, and consoles on the second floor. The first floor windows are also topped with entablatures. On the ground floor, the windows are similar, with block sills, and there is an additional recessed semi-circular window high up on the east side, featuring radial glazing bars. The entrance consists of a recessed door with four moulded panels and a fine brass lion head knocker, topped by a narrow rectangular fanlight. This entrance is flanked by broad stucco pilaster strips on pedestals, which have heavy Doric brackets with guttae. A dentil band returns to the wall and extends over the door, beneath a projecting cornice band. A blind rendered bay separates No 9 from No 10.
