Description
The building at 1 Belvedere Street is a circa 1850 double-fronted semi-detached house, also incorporating No 1 Vernon Square, and is notably tall for Ryde. It is a four-storey building with a semi-basement. The exterior is coursed rendering with wrap-around pilasters that rise from the plinth to support a heavy cornice above the second floor. The roof is of low pitch slate, with overhanging eaves.
The frontages are to both Belvedere Street and Vernon Square, each featuring three windows, recessed and with largely intact glazing bars. A large, broad, enclosed porch fronts Belvedere Street, featuring a wrap-around pilaster frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The porch contains modern recessed doors with narrow rectangular fanlights within architrave surrounds. The porch of No 1 Vernon Square has two additional pilasters and the first floor has been enclosed and glazed. A flight of 12 steps with a landing leads to the Belvedere Street entrance, accommodating the sloping site.
The north front, facing Melville Street, also has three windows, with the central ones blind. The ground and first floors feature superimposed rendered rectangular bays, each containing one window with intact glazing bars. These bays are flanked by wrap-around pilasters and have a frieze and cornice. A parapet exists above, providing a terrace for the second-floor windows.
