Description
17 Melville Street is a villa built around 1840, featuring two storeys and a basement. It has a slightly taller and narrower frontage compared to the adjacent buildings. The exterior is faced with stucco and topped with a low-pitched hipped slate roof that has projecting eaves. Architectural details include a frieze, a first-floor sill course, and a plinth. The villa has three recessed sash windows, which do not have glazing bars except in the basement. The central door is recessed, panelled, and glazed, with splayed reveals and a plain surround. A Greek Doric porch with free-standing columns at the front and pilasters on the wall supports a frieze and cornice above. The north garden front is similar to the adjacent No 16 but features an additional stucco bay to the east. The recessed sash windows on this side have intact glazing bars on the first floor to the west and on the ground floor where the windows are full length. There is a terrace in front, but no verandah. Nos 14 to 20 Melville Street form a group.
