Description
No 16 Melville Street is a villa built around 1840, featuring two storeys and a basement with a stucco exterior. The low-pitched hipped slate roof has its eaves concealed at the front by a parapet and cornice. There is a sill band at the first floor and a plinth at the base. The villa has three windows, with the center one being blind, and all have recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars and block sills on the ground floor. The central door is recessed and consists of six moulded panels topped with a rectangular fanlight. The entrance is set back to create a shallow porch, which is flanked by paired Doric pilasters, with a frieze and cornice above. A flight of four steps leads up to the door. On the north garden front, there is no parapet, and the eaves project, with a frieze and band between the storeys. The windows here include a recessed two-light casement with marginal glazing bars and French windows on the ground floor. Additionally, there is a tent-roofed verandah supported by lattice cast iron columns. Nos 14 to 20 Melville Street form a group with this villa.
