Description

No 18 Melville Street is a villa built around 1840 to 1850. It is three storeys high with a basement and has a rendered, painted finish. The building features pilasters on the front and sides, a plinth, and a low-pitched hipped slate roof with bracketed eaves that project. There are three windows on the front, with the center ones being blind and recessed. The sash windows, only one of which retains its glazing bars, have shouldered architrave surrounds and moulded sills supported by block consoles. The ground floor windows are enhanced with a block cornice and narrow panels between the sill consoles.

The small basement areas are enclosed with bowed railings topped with spearheads. The central door is modern and set back, with splayed reveals and a plain surround. The porch features freestanding Ionic columns on parapets beside a flight of four steps, along with Doric pilasters on the wall. The entablature includes an egg and dart band and a dentil cornice, topped with a blocking course.

To the east, there is a two-storey wing with one window that is set back. The north garden front has flanking pilasters and three windows, with two in a shallow bow to the west; the ground floor of this bow projects as a later addition. Most of the glazing bars are intact. On the east side, there are superimposed wooden bay windows on the ground and first floors, each with three lights and sash windows. The first-floor bay window retains its glazing bars and is adorned with Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, along with a panelled apron. The ground floor bay window features plain dividing strips and narrow lights in the frieze. The wing on this front has three storeys with one window, some of which have intact glazing bars. The ground floor window opens onto a dog-leg flight of steps with a mid-19th century cast iron balustrade.
