Description
Stone Place, which includes an attached cartshed, is a house that was formerly a farmhouse. It dates from the early 17th century and was built by the Puckford family. The building is constructed from Isle of Wight stone rubble and features an old tiled roof with end chimneystacks; the left side is made of stone while the right side is brick. It has two storeys and attics, with three windows. The house has three gabled dormers, each with three-light casements. On the first floor, there are three three-light casements set in stone mullioned surrounds. The ground floor windows were restored and enlarged in the early 20th century.
The entrance features an obtusely pointed stone doorcase with a label mould above, which also extends over all the ground floor windows. There is a blocked relieving arch, and on each floor to the extreme right, there is a blocked original mullion. The gable ends have kneelers, and the right side elevation includes a blocked attic mullion and cross-shaped iron ties. The rear elevation displays some square panelled timber framing with brick infill, along with one panel of wattle and daub. Inside, there is a four-centred arched stone fireplace with blank spandrels. Attached to the right side of the house is an 18th-century three-bay cartshed, which is open-fronted to the rear on wooden piers with padstones. The other sides of the cartshed are made of ironstone rubble with brick dressings and have a tiled roof.
