Description
Oak Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the early 18th century, with a wing added in 1773 and alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble and features a roof that is partially thatched and partially covered with slate, along with three brick chimneystacks. The building is L-shaped, with the front part being one and a half storeys tall and featuring five windows in the attic, which are five casements with thatch forming eyebrows. The ground floor has two three-light casements and one blocked window to the left.
On the left side, there is a late 18th century or early 19th century door with six fielded panels, two of which are glazed, and a later wooden porch supported by chamfered posts and trelliswork. The right side includes a late 18th century lean-to outbuilding with one window. The left side L wing has two full storeys and features two sashes with verticals only.
Inside, the cottage has an open fireplace with an arch leading to a bread oven, and a chamfered spine beam with lambs tongue stops, along with joists that also have lambs tongue stops. The parlour contains brick piers and an arched stone lintel, as well as 19th century china cupboards, one of which has serpentine shelves, and a book cupboard on the opposite side.
