Description
No. 42 The Strand is a villa dating from around 1840. It is two storeys tall with a basement and has a rendered, painted exterior. The gable end slate roof is concealed by a parapet and a moulded cornice. There is a moulded sill course on the first floor, with a frieze below and a plinth. The building features four windows, two of which are in a bow shape on the west side, with recessed sash windows that have intact glazing bars, block sills, and moulded surrounds. To the east, there is an adjoining bow with a projecting entrance bay that reaches up to the sill course. The entrance has a recessed panelled door with some modern glazing and a blind semi-circular fanlight, along with stepped reveals. The entrance is flanked by pilasters, and a keystone breaks from the crown of the arch into the frieze above. There is a cornice that projects from the first floor sill course. A flight of ten steps with a Victorian cast iron balustrade leads to the landing and sides.
