Description
49 The Strand is a villa built around 1840, featuring two storeys and a basement. The exterior is faced with stone that imitates brick, with rendered quoins. It has a frieze, a moulded sill course at the first floor, and a plinth. The low-pitched hipped slate roof has wide eaves. There are four windows, including two bow windows that extend through both storeys on the east side. These windows are recessed, sash style, with later glazing bars and block sills on the ground floor. The entrance has a Doric pilastered enclosed porch with blind windows on the sides and an egg and dart frieze in the pediment. The panelled door features a semi-circular fanlight, with paired pilasters on either side and a keystone that breaks into the frieze, topped by a cornice that projects from the sill course. A flight of steps leads up to the entrance, which has rendered parapets, copings, and capped piers. Nos 46 to 50A form a group with this building.
