Description

Sorrento is a villa built around 1830 or 1840, located on the north side of The Strand. It has two storeys and a basement, with a cement-rendered exterior featuring a plinth and flanking pilasters adorned with incised Greek key panels. To the west, there is a three-storey rendered square tower. The main block and the tower have low-pitched hipped slate roofs, with projecting eaves that are bracketed on the tower and decorated with lion heads along the guttering. A moulded band runs between the storeys.

The villa has four windows, including one in the tower, which are recessed sash windows without glazing bars. These windows have architrave surrounds and block sills. The central porch features incised pilasters and is accessed by a flight of steps with parapets. The steps and the front of the porch are glazed in, and the entrance at the foot of the steps is gabled, complete with dentils and brackets.

On the north Esplanade front, the design is similar to that facing The Strand, but includes a mid-19th century bay with three lights, sash windows, chamfered pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice on the east side. There are cast iron steps supported by plain iron columns leading down from the side of the bay to the garden. The basement windows still retain their glazing bars.

Sorrento is part of a group with Nos 1 to 7 and Nos 9 to 20 on The Strand.
