Description

The Strand numbers 9 and 10 are a semi-detached pair of buildings dating from approximately the 1840s. They are constructed of coursed rubble with rendered quoins, a first-floor sill course, and a frieze below the eaves. The roofs are of low pitch slate, with bracketed eaves. The buildings feature projecting bays with low-pitched gables at the centre.

Number 9 has two windows to the front, while number 10 has five. The windows are sash windows with intact glazing bars, set within rendered surrounds and block sills. The second floor of the gabled bays has round-headed windows with moulded arches and consoles supporting the sills. Number 9 has a flush porch flanked by pilaster strips, a moulded archway over the entrance, a recessed door with four moulded panels and two glazed sections, and a semi-circular fanlight with radial glazing bars. Number 10 has a slightly projecting porch with Doric pilasters, a moulded arch with a keystone, a recessed panelled door, and a blind semi-circular fanlight. Both entrances are approached by flights of seven steps, with parapets supported by capped piers.

The North Esplanade frontage is similar, but Number 9 features a rectangular rendered bay with a tripartite window and two side lights on the ground floor, framed by Doric pilasters, sashes with glazing bars, a frieze, and a cornice. Number 10 has a canted bay of three lights with sashes and some retained glazing bars, with Doric pilasters extending down to the base, a frieze, and a cornice. A single-storey wing, constructed of yellow brick and matching the main block's window style, was added to the east. Some glazing bars are missing on this eastern frontage.

Numbers 1 to 7 and numbers 9 to 20 together form a group.
