Description
Richmond House and Sandford House comprise a pair of houses built as a single composition, dating from the 1820s. They are located on The Strand. The houses are three storeys high with a basement, and each has two windows. The facades are stuccoed and feature a stringcourse above the ground floor. There are panels of balustrading below the two centre first-floor windows. Pilasters are present above the ground floor; the outermost are single Doric columns, while those between the outer windows are paired Ionic columns. A cornice and parapet run along the top, with partial balustrading. The outer windows on the second floor are triple windows. The first-floor windows are flattened bow windows of three lights, with pilasters between the lights and cornices above. The ground-floor windows are canted bay windows. The two centre windows on all floors are set within architraves; the first-floor windows have pediments supported by consoles. The original glazing bars are largely missing, except on the top floor. Nos. 1 to 7 and Nos. 9 to 20 form a group.
