Description
54 and 55 The Strand are semi-detached buildings dating from around 1840. They are three storeys tall with a basement and are faced in stucco, featuring some rusticated quoins on the west side. The low-pitched hipped slate roof is concealed by a parapet with coping and has a moulded cornice below.
On the second floor, there are two recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars and block sills. Each first-floor window is a rectangular bay window, tripartite with front and side lights, also with sashes and glazing bars intact. These windows have dividing pilasters that extend down into a panelled apron, topped with an entablature and supported by brackets. The ground floor features one tripartite window for each building, which is a recessed sash with glazing bars and block sills. The basement window mirrors the second-floor design.
Entrances are located to the west of the ground floor windows, with recessed panelled doors; part of the door for No 55 has modern glazing. Each entrance has a narrow rectangular fanlight above it. Access to the buildings is via flights of seven steps with stuccoed parapets, and No 55 features coping and capped piers.
