Description
Dover House is a villa built around 1840 to 1850, located on the north side of The Strand. It has two storeys and a semi-basement, constructed from coursed rubble with rendered quoins, a cornice at the first floor, and a frieze below the eaves. The entrance bay is recessed and features three storeys with one window on the west side. The roof is low-pitched, hipped, and covered with slate, featuring wide eaves.
The villa has three recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars, except for the first floor east window and the center ground floor window, which has been converted into an entrance. All windows are framed with broad rendered surrounds. The enclosed porch at the entrance bay is detailed with inner Greek Doric columns and outer pilasters, along with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course above. The first and second floor windows in the entrance bay are blind, with the first floor featuring an architrave surround and a pediment supported by small brackets adorned with shell ornamentation. The second floor has tripartite round-headed lights with consoles to the sill, backing up into the frieze.
On the north Esplanade front, there are six windows, one of which is blind. Three of these are located in a two-storeyed canted bay, all with architrave surrounds and no glazing bars. The entrance bay on the tower has the second floor tripartite window unblocked on this side, as well as the first floor window, which lacks a pediment. Three windows have casements, and a door leads from one side of the canted bay into the garden.
Dover House is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 7 and Nos 9 to 20, all of which are consecutive.
