Description

Nos 2 and 3, The Strand are a semi-detached pair of houses dating from around 1840. They are located on the north side of The Strand, with a further elevation facing the North Esplanade. The houses are built of coursed rubble, with rendered rusticated quoins. They have gable-ended slate roofs, displaying two gables to the front of each house; a smaller gable is positioned above the recessed entrance bays. The roofs feature bargeboards.

The frontages have two windows on each floor. The second-floor windows are recessed and have later sash glazing bars within brick rendered surrounds and block sills; the inner windows are of two lights and feature drip mouldings to No 2. The first-floor windows on the entrance bays are similar to those above, while the recessed bays have canted bays of four lights, with mullions and transoms, and cornices sloping to leaded roofs.

Modern extensions for garages now occupy the ground floor, but the original porches remain, retaining bargeboard gables and finials, along with four-centred arched entrances. The recessed doors also have four-centred arches and are panelled and glazed.

On the North Esplanade front, the first-floor windows of the recessed bays are taller, with drip moulds above. The first-floor canted bays rest on terraces above ground-floor stuccoed canted bays with crenellated parapets, featuring three-light centre French windows. Recessed entrances are located to the sides, mirroring the main front with four-centred arches and drip mouldings to No 3.

Nos 1 to 7 (consec) and Nos 9 to 20 (consec) form a group.
