Description

This is a semi-detached pair of buildings dating from around 1840 to 1850, located on The Strand and the North Esplanade. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble, rendered at the quoins and with a plinth. They have a low-pitched slate roof, overhanging eaves, and a frieze below the eaves.

The frontages each have three windows, with one window in the recessed entrance bays which are set back. The upper windows are sash windows, lacking glazing bars except in the basement. They have rendered architrave surrounds and block sills. The basement windows have yellow brick dressings and flat arches. The recessed entrances have panelled and glazed doors, flanked by Doric pilasters—the outer ones being wider—beneath a moulded arch. Flights of six steps lead up to the doors, with rendered parapets and piers topped with cast iron urns on Number 16.

The North Esplanade frontage has three windows, with two windows arranged in a bow that rises the full height of the building. The windows here are similar to those on the Strand frontage, with architrave surrounds. A band runs between the storeys on the North Esplanade frontage. Buildings numbered 1 to 7 and 9 to 20 form a group.
