Description
Dolphin Cottage is a pair of cottages located to the rear of numbers 7, 8, and 9 King's Road in Brighton. These cottages are thought to have originally been part of a terrace and are now in one ownership. They date from the late 18th century or early 19th century, possibly with a core from around 1720, and feature 20th-century doors. The front is constructed of red brick in English Garden Wall bond, while the left side elevation is made of painted cobbles with brick lacing courses. The roof is not visible due to restricted space, and there are end brick chimneystacks.
The exterior has three storeys and two windows, with wooden horizontally sliding sashes. There is a central cambered opening that contains two 20th-century half-glazed doors. The interior has not been inspected. These cottages are reputed to have been fishermen's cottages from a terrace that extended to the north but has since been demolished. They are described as "an unusually early survivor in this part of Brighton" in Carder's "Encyclopedia of Brighton." The building was formerly listed in error as No. 6 King's Road.
