Description

6 Little East Street is a building in Brighton that dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. Originally two separate shops, they were combined in 1845. The exterior features stucco scored to imitate ashlar and a tiled roof. The building has two storeys over a basement, with each unit having one window range. The ground floor is occupied by two early shop fronts, with the right one being slightly narrower than the left. Each shop front includes a segmental bay window, with a flat-arched entrance to the right of each window. These entrances are topped by an entablature with a broad, projecting cornice supported by console brackets. An entablature with a modillioned cornice runs across the top of both fronts, terminating at the left with a console bracket stop. The first floor features flat-arched windows, and the eaves are guttered. There is a stack on the left party wall. The interior has not been inspected.

Historically, in the early 19th century, the left unit housed a stationer's shop while the right was an ironmongery and hardware store. In 1845, the entire building became a fishing tackle shop run by Samuel Andrew, whose family operated the business until the Second World War. Commonly known as "Andrew's Cottage," it later became a tailor's shop and then a café-restaurant with a music licence.
