Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104SW EAST STREET 577-1/64/220 (West side) Nos.20, 21 AND 21A

II

Terraced houses and shops. Early C19. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement. 9-window range which wraps around from East Street to Bartholomews. The plan follows the blunted, triangular corner site. The following description treats the elevation continuously, by reference to window ranges which are measured from the party wall in East Street. The C20 shop front to the ground floor has an entrance near the corner and another near the party wall to Bartholomews. All openings are flat arched, the windows with projecting sills. On the first floor is a Tuscan pilastrade of 9 bays; the middle bay, No.5, takes up the corner. Each bay of this pilastrade has a window, those to window ranges 1 and 2, and 8 and 9 have 2 x 2 sashes of early to mid C19 design. Window ranges 4-6 are taken up almost completely by shop windows. There are many sashes of original design to the upper floors: 6 x 6 to second floor and 3 x 3 to third or attic floor. The sashes in the 4th- and 6th-window ranges are curved along with the front wall of the building. A camber-arched basement window to either side of shop entrance, with 6 x 6 sliding sashed of original design. First-floor windows in the third and 7th range are blocked; second-floor windows in the third and fifth range are also blocked. There is a storey band between the second and third floors. Entablature with projecting cornice and parapet. INTERIOR: not inspected.
