Description
Number 51 is a terraced house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and has been restored since 1990. The building is finished in stucco and features a parapeted roof.
The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic over a basement, with a three-window range on the main elevation and a four-window range on the return. The main elevation includes a full-height canted bay. The ground floor is designed with banded, chamfered rustication that continues along the return. All windows are flat arched with projecting sills, except for those on the first floor, which are segmental arched. A first-floor balcony is supported by cast-iron brackets and enclosed by cast-iron railings. The ground-floor windows of the bay feature cast-iron flower guards from the mid to late 19th century. An entablature with a projecting cornice separates the second floor from the attic storey, with the sills of the attic windows aligned with the upper fascia of this cornice. There is a smaller cornice at the attic level.
The entablature and upper cornice extend across the return, where there is a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, set within an aedicule formed by a pair of Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. To the left of this aedicule is a segmental bay with tripartite windows. The third and fourth window ranges on the return are blocked. The attic-bay windows feature sashes of original design: 3/6 for the centre and 1/2 for the sides, which include margin lights. To the right of this, there is one window with 3/6 sashes of original design. There are chimney stacks located on the return and rear walls. The interior has not been inspected.
