Description

No. 53 Old Steine is a terraced house built in the early 19th century, constructed of stucco with a roof obscured by a blocking course. The building has four storeys over a basement and features a two-window range. Access is gained by steps leading to a round-arched entrance, which includes a fanlight with decorative glazing bars, all set beneath a prostyle porch supported by a pair of Tuscan columns, with responds and an entablature. The jambs are subordered with quarter pilasters. To the right of the entrance, there is a full-height canted bay with tripartite windows, and all windows are flat arched. The first-floor verandah was rebuilt in the mid to late 19th century, and there is a single window range above the entrance. A continuous entablature with a dentil cornice runs across the top of the building. The property is currently undergoing restoration. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted that No. 53 was home to Major-General Sir Arthur Clifton, a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo. Nos 52 and 53 form a group with Marlborough House.
