Description

Number 1 is a late 18th century or early 19th century house that was refronted in the mid 19th century, located on Steine Lane in Brighton. The building is constructed of stucco and features a parapeted roof. It has a three-window range and stands four storeys tall over a basement. The only visible remnant of the earlier structure is the round-arched entrance, which has a decorative fanlight and a panelled intrados. This entrance is framed by an aedicule made up of a pair of attached Tuscan columns, each supporting an impost block and a projecting cornice. Above the door is a segmental pediment formed by raking cornices. The walls on either side of the entrance are treated as banded rustication. To the right, there is a full-height canted bay, and to the left, a two-storey canted bay. The bay windows are tripartite, and all windows have flat arches. There are storey bands between all floors, and cast-iron railings are present at the stairs and basement area. The original six-panel door has been removed. This building is included for its group value with the former Royal Pavilion Hotel at No. 7 Castle Square.
