Description
Number 56 is a house built in 1875, possibly as an extension of an earlier structure, with external embellishments added in the early 20th century. It features a stucco exterior and a parapeted roof. The building has three storeys and an attic over a basement, with a five-window range on the main elevation and a two-window range on the return.
The main facade is symmetrically arranged around a round-arched entrance with a fanlight, accessed by a short flight of steps. This entrance is topped by a broken segmental pediment supported by console brackets, with a scrolled finial in the tympanum. On either side of the entrance, there are a pair of round-arched windows with fluted keystones that extend below the sill to enclose a spandrel panel decorated with volutes and swags. The ornamental treatment of the ground floor, which may date to the early 20th century, is in a late 18th-century French style and features banded rustication. Storey bands separate all floors.
The upper-floor windows are flat arched, with the first-floor windows being floor-to-ceiling and featuring eared architraves. Each second-floor window has a cornice supported by console brackets above it. An entablature with a projecting cornice is located below a balustraded parapet. On the ground floor of the return, there is one round-arched window similar to those on the main facade, while the remaining windows are flat arched, each with a cornice on the first and second floors. Additionally, there is a round-arched entrance set at the rear of the return within a rusticated aedicule. The property also includes cast-iron railings to the area and piers.
