Description
No. 5 Castle Square is a terraced house dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It has three storeys above a basement and features a one-window range. The exterior is finished in stucco, and the roof is parapeted.
Prominently in the center of the first-floor elevation is a shallow segmental bay that contains tripartite windows, which are topped by a metal semidome. The side lights of the bay are separated from the central window by thin pilasters styled as fasces, a design element that originated in Empire-style furnishings and is commonly seen in many 19th-century buildings in Brighton. All the windows are flat arched.
Flanking the bay are giant pilasters that extend through the second floor, supporting a plain entablature that is capped with a pediment. To the left of the portico, there is a short full-height wall that extends to the party wall of No. 4 Castle Square. There are stacks located at the party wall.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of a group that includes Nos. 4 and 6-7 Castle Square.
