Description

The Star and Garter is a former hotel, now a public house, located at No. 16 King's Road in Brighton. It dates from the mid-18th century to early 19th century, with expansions made in the mid-19th century. This listing specifically includes the section that extends along Little East Street up to the party wall with No. 11 Little East Street, which is not included in this listing. The building features stucco exterior and a gambrel roof of slate over the section nearest the party wall, while the rest of the roof is parapeted.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic over a basement, with a four-window range. There is a flat-arched entrance on the Little East Street side, framed by an aedicule with a pair of Tuscan columns and an entablature that includes a date stone marked "1750." The rear elevation curves to follow the line of Little East Street. There is another flat-arched entrance at the party wall with No. 11, and a segmental-arched entrance near the corner. A storey band separates the first and second floors, and there is an entablature band below the parapet. All windows are flat-arched, with one dormer in the gambrel roof featuring a sliding sash of 6 x 6 panes, which is of an original late 18th century or early 19th century design. There are chimney stacks at the party walls.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the building was originally known as the Star and Garter Hotel and was referred to as Dr Brighton's in the 19th century. It has hosted many notable figures, including Jack Dempsey, Charlie Chaplin, Richard Burton, and the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VIII.
