Description

Number 22 is a terraced house located on the east side of Old Steine in Brighton, dating from the early 19th century, though it has been significantly altered since then. The building is finished in stucco and features a roof that is obscured by a parapet. It has six storeys over a half basement and presents a two-window range.

The entrance is accessed by stairs leading up to a segmental-arched doorway, which is flanked by pilasters. Large volute brackets support a first-floor verandah that has cast-iron railings and a concave metal roof with valance boards. To the right of the entrance, there is a full-height canted bay with tripartite windows; the basement windows are segmental arched, while the others are flat arched. To the left of the bay and above the entrance, there is one window with a projecting sill on each floor, with the second-floor window featuring a floating cornice. The spandrel of the fourth-floor window above the entrance is panelled.

Cornice storey bands are present between the second and third floors, as well as between the fourth and fifth floors, although these are interrupted by the bay. The top floor is capped with a cornice and parapet that has coping. The railings to the basement window are located in the centre of the bay. Number 22 and the adjacent buildings, numbered 20-31 Old Steine, form a group. The interior has not been inspected.
