Description

Number 28 is a terraced house located on Old Steine in Brighton, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, and was restored in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stucco and has a tiled roof.

The exterior features four storeys over a half basement and has a two-window range. There are steps leading up to a round-arched entrance, which includes a fanlight and panelled jambs and archivolts. The entrance is framed by an aedicule with a pair of Tuscan columns, an entablature with impost blocks, and a pediment that has a raking cornice. To the right, there is a full-height segmental bay with tripartite, flat-arched windows. The basement windows retain original sash designs, with the center window measuring 3 x 6 and the side lights measuring 2 x 4. To the left of the bay, there is a single window on the first through third floors; the first-floor window is flat arched, while the windows above are camber arched.

Notably, the first-floor verandah, attributed to the architect Charles Augustin Busby, is rectangular in plan and features cast-iron railings, stanchions, and brackets. The railings are designed with intersecting ogee arches, and the stanchions resemble bamboo poles. The metal roof of the verandah includes valance boards. A stack is present on the right party wall.

The interior has not been inspected, but there are cast-iron railings to the stairs and area. Number 28 is part of a group with numbers 20-31.
