Description

Number 21 is a terraced house located on the east side of Old Steine in Brighton. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent alterations in the mid to late 19th century. The house is finished in stucco and features a roof that is obscured by a parapet. It has six storeys over a half basement and a two-window range, similar in appearance to Number 22 next door.

Access to the house is via a flat-arched entrance, which is reached by stairs. The ground floor displays chamfered rustication, and the entrance is paired with that of Number 20, both of which are set beneath a shallow prostyle porch supported by fluted Doric columns and an entablature. To the right, there is a full-height canted bay with tripartite windows, while to the left of the bay and above the entrance, there is one window on each floor, all featuring architraves and projecting sills.

A balcony on the first floor is supported by cast-iron brackets and railings. There are cornice storey bands between the first and second, and the second and third floors, along with plain storey bands separating all upper floors. The parapet has coping at the fifth floor, and all horizontal bands continue across the bay. The interior has not been inspected, but there are railings to the stairs and area. Number 21 and the adjacent properties from Number 20 to Number 31 Old Steine form a cohesive group.
