Description

Number 20 is a terraced house dating from around 1825, likely designed by Amon Wilds and Charles Augustin Busby. It is constructed of stucco, with the roof hidden behind a parapet. The house is four storeys high with an attic, built over a half basement, and features a three-window facade. The entire front elevation is treated as a full-height, full-width segmental bay. Steps lead to a flat-arched entrance, shared with the adjacent Number 21, and sheltered by a shallow prostyle porch adorned with fluted Doric columns and an entablature. To the left of the entrance are two round-arched windows. The ground floor features chamfered rustication. A first-floor balcony is present, supported by cast-iron railings and brackets. All windows above the ground floor are flat-arched with architraves, except for those in the attic, which have simple projecting sills. Each first-floor window has a further entablature with a floating cornice, and the second-floor windows have balconettes. A storey band separates the second and third floors, while a dentil cornice sits between the third floor and the attic storey. The attic cornice is topped with a balustraded parapet. The interior of the house has not been inspected. Railings are present to the stairs and area. A plaque on the ground floor commemorates that the geologist Gideon Algernon Mantell lived at the property from 1833 to 1838. Numbers 20 to 31 Old Steine form a notable group.
