Description

This is a terrace of thirty houses built in the 18th century, facing Brunswick Road in Hove. The houses are constructed of stucco over a rubble and brick core, with the roofs hidden behind a parapet. The terrace is situated on a hillside. Each house has three storeys over a basement, with a two-window bow front. The windows are sash windows with differing glazing patterns. The parapet is finished with a dentil cornice, and moulded surrounds feature on the first-floor windows. A continuous cast-iron balustrade runs along the front. The ground floor is rusticated, and each house has a small, pilastered porch. A variety of doors are present, all accessed by a flight of steps with railings that return to piers fronting the road. The arrangement of the railings and balusters on the dwarf wall to the road varies. Nos.9 to 12 are decorated with shallow pediments over the first-floor windows; these houses also feature vermiculated rustication to the ground floor and porches with acanthus leaf capitals supporting an entablature with paired brackets. The facades of Nos.7-8 and 13-18, and No.26, have been rendered with roughcast in the 20th century. The terrace incorporates Nos.124 and 125 Western Road and faces a similar range of houses at Nos.31-58 Brunswick Road.
