Description
This is a terrace of dwellings, built around 1830-1840, located in Hove. The terrace, designed by C.A. Busby, originally included numbers 44-47 Western Road. The northern end has been altered with the addition of shop fronts in the mid-to-late 20th century. The buildings are constructed with stucco over brick, although the ground floor of the former number 50 (now numbers 44-47 Western Road) features red brick. The roofs are hidden behind a parapet.
The terrace is four stories high and has full-height bow fronts with three-window sections. It features solid balustrade parapets, a moulded cornice, flat string courses, and rusticated ground floors. The windows are sash windows with a variety of glazing bar patterns. The first-floor windows have moulded surrounds and individual cast-iron balconies. The variety of doors, mostly half-glazed, date from the 20th century. Cast-iron railings extend from the entrances along the street frontage, including gates leading to a basement area. The artist and cartoonist John Leech resided at number 16 in 1849.
