Description

No. 20 Western Road is a dwelling over a shop, built between 1824 and 1830, and is attributed to architects Amon Wilds and Charles Augustus Busby. The building features a stucco exterior over brick and rubble, with a hipped or pyramid concrete tile roof that is concealed behind a parapet. It has a curved corner frontage at the junction of Western Road and Upper Market Street, standing three storeys high with one bay. Ionic pilasters frame the curved corner and the window bay facing Western Road. The plinths are interrupted by an inserted fascia for a 36-pane bow window with a shallow half-dome. The ground floor has been gutted to accommodate a late 20th-century shopfront. The left side of the building, which faces Upper Market Street, includes narrow bay windows with late 20th-century glazing and a late 20th-century panel door, accessed by a flight of steps. The building is included for its group value.
