Description
No. 98 High Street is a shop built in the early 19th century, replacing an earlier structure as part of the gradual development of the historic market place. The building features a brick front that has been colourwashed. It is two storeys high, with a parapet that conceals a mid-20th century flat roof.
On the first floor, there is a plate-glazed sash window set in a reveal beneath a flat arch, which is framed by a segmentally arched panel with projecting impost bands. The ground floor includes a mid-20th century shop window and fascia, flanked by panels of mosaic cladding and a mosaic stallriser.
The rear elevation facing West Street is stuccoed with masonry lining. It has one slightly recessed sash window on both the ground and first floors, each with architrave surrounds and exposed boxes. To the right, there is a 20th century half-glazed hardwood entrance door in a plain surround, featuring a recessed panel above and a moulded flat door hood supported by cut consoles. This building is included for its group value.
