Description
This is a shop dating from the 15th century, with extensions from the 16th century, and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and plastered, with an old tiled roof featuring a gable facing the street.
The building is two storeys high, with a cellar. The first floor juts out, exposing the ceiling joists and a large horizontal timber (bressumer). Restored wooden windows with three lights are set into this projecting section. During a restoration in 1981, inauthentic exposed timber studs were added. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front recessed under the jetty bressumer. The entrance door is half-glazed with two recessed panels. Flanking the door are two modern shop windows with plate glass. The north elevation, facing West Street, has exposed timber studwork, wind bracing, restored timber mullioned windows either side of a central post, and, above a tie-beam, an exposed crown post with downward curving wind bracing on either side. A modern flat-roofed extension runs along the West Street frontage.
The building was originally a two-bay, unheated structure dating to the 15th century. It filled in part of the historic market place and a third, north bay with a fireplace was added in the 16th century. Mortices (holes) in the timbers indicate a small shop at the front with a doorway and one unglazed window; the first floor was originally a single room. The roof has a crown post. The cellar is constructed of flint and has small holes in the walls (keeping holes), with a brick floor.
