Description
Carter and Partners is a shop located in Lenham, dating from the early 17th century and restored in the late 20th century. The building has three low storeys and is timber-framed with plaster infilling and a plain tile roof. It is a fragment of a range that runs parallel to the street, featuring a cross-wing at the right end. The cross-wing is roofed similarly but has its front elevation treated like the rest of the range. The building is close-studded, with a mid-rail on the right half of the first floor. The second floor is only half-height but jetties out along the entire remaining front elevation, with internal evidence suggesting a jetty to the first floor as well. There is a moulded second-floor jetty bressumer and a moulded wood eaves cornice. A tall brick stack is located at the rear, and there are no windows on the second floor. Traces of a central oriel window can be seen on the first floor, along with a three-light frieze window featuring ovolo-moulded wood mullions to the left. A glazing-bar sash has replaced the oriel window. The ground-floor shop front was added in the late 20th century. Inside, exposed beams and posts are visible, although some have been partly rebuilt.
