Description
This is a row of terraced houses dating from around 1865. They are located on the west side of Roundhill Crescent in Brighton. The houses are constructed of stucco, with their roofs hidden behind a parapet. They are three storeys high and have a basement, with each house featuring two windows. The houses are paired, with entrances situated next to each other and sharing a single balcony, which has since been subdivided.
The design is consistent for each pair: they are separated by full-height pilasters, rusticated on the ground floor with two decorative blocks at the cornice level, the lower ones bracketed. Steps lead to round-arched entrances, each with a fanlight and a panelled door. The architrave of the entrance is connected by a springing band to that above the ground-floor round-arched window. A moulding runs between the ground and first floors. The first and second floor windows have flat arches with moulded architraves. A cantilevered balcony projects from the first floor, supported by a cast-iron balustrade with scrolling foliage. A cornice and parapet tops the building, with chimney stacks built into the party walls. Corniced gate piers and low walls are situated at the street level, along with cast-iron railings leading to the steps.
Number 31 has simplified mouldings throughout. At numbers 35 and 37, the mouldings are simplified on the first and second floors. The interiors have not been inspected.
