Description
The Jewish Cemetery Chapel, built in 1893 by Lainson and Son and constructed by Messrs Garrett, is a single-storey chapel located in Brighton. It is designed in the 'Queen Anne' style and features gauged red brick set in Flemish bond with a tiled roof. The chapel has an octagonal plan, with broad, buttress-like piers approximately 7 feet high separating the faces, topped with consoles. Above these piers, a narrower pier, one brick wide, extends up to a finial above the parapet.
The entrance is located on the west front and is flat-arched, framed by a moulded architrave, a swelling frieze, and a pediment. Above the entrance is a brick panel shaped like an apron, decorated with festoons. The windows are round-arched, also with moulded architraves and festooned panels above. These panels are interrupted by a continuous band, except where it meets the angle piers. The chapel features a cornice and a parapet adorned with quatrefoil panels, possibly made of terracotta, and has a shallow octagonal roof topped with a wrought-iron finial. The interior has not been inspected.
