Description
This is a terrace of dwellings located in Hove, dating from approximately 1840 to 1850, with alterations made in the mid-20th century to the attic storey. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick, with slate roofs. The terrace is situated on a hillside and comprises 3 storeys plus an attic, and 4 storeys over a basement. The facades present a 3-window frontage, each with a shallow, curved, full-height bay. The windows are sash windows, some of which are missing glazing bars. A pilaster parapet disguises the attic at the north end, where the elevations rise to 4 storeys. The buildings feature a moulded cornice, some with modillions, moulded surrounds to square-headed windows, rusticated ground floors, paired pilaster doorcases, and mostly half-glazed doors with leaded lights, approached by a short flight of steps, some with tessellated pavements. Individual cast-iron balustrades are present on the first floor of each dwelling; the six northern bays have a deep moulded cornice to the ground floor, carrying a flat cast-iron balustrade supported by cast-iron piers. Some windows have cast-iron window box guards. The attic space has been rebuilt, particularly at the south end of the terrace. No.10 features a frieze of paired calyx and fan or shell-shaped motifs. Low walls extend along the road frontage from entrances, incorporating balusters and piers, with some attached railings.
