Description
A terrace of dwellings, built around 1840 to 1855, with some alterations in the mid-20th century to the attic spaces. The buildings are constructed with stucco over brick, and have slate roofs. Situated on a hillside, the terrace comprises four storeys plus an attic, over a basement. Numbers 9 to 13 have deep bow fronts, while the remaining properties (15 to 69) have three-window frontages to shallow, curved, full-height bays. The windows are sash windows, some with missing glazing bars. Several attic windows have been inserted between pilasters within the parapet, while others have baluster parapets. Further details include a moulded cornice, moulded surrounds to square-headed window openings, individual cast-iron balconies to the first floor of each dwelling, rusticated ground floors, pilaster doorcases, and a variety of doors, mostly half-glazed with leaded lights, approached by short flights of steps, some with tessellated pavements. Cast-iron railings and bottle balustrading extend from the entrances along the street frontage. Street directories indicate that numbers 9 to 13 were occupied in 1843, and another five properties were mentioned in 1850.
