Description

The New Leathern Bottle is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the late 17th century and has undergone alterations and extensions in the late 18th century and mid 20th century.

The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some timber framing and brick infill visible at the rear. It features an old tiled gabled roof with a half hip and a catslide at the back. Originally, it had a rectangular plan consisting of three framed bays, with a two-cell central stair plan extension at the front. The staircase was relocated in the early 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys and one and a half storeys high, with a chimney on each end gable at the front and one on the gable at the rear, all topped with corniced heads and clay pots. The symmetrical road front to the west has three bays, slightly offset to the right. There is a dentilled brick cornice from the late 18th century, and the windows are three-light casements with segmental brick heads, with a central window above the door that has two lights. The entrance door, which is from the 20th century, is set within an 18th-century doorcase that has a moulded cornice, although it has been altered in the 20th century. To the right, there is a small two-bay extension with a flat roof added in the 20th century.

Inside, some timber framing is visible, along with a queen post roof truss.
