Description

St Michael's Grange is a hall house with crosswings, now functioning as a large house. It dates back to the 15th century and has been altered and extended in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building features a combination of part timber frame with brick infill and part brick construction, topped with old tile gabled irregular roofs.

The layout is H-shaped with later extensions to the northeast, including a three-framed bay former hall and two-framed bay crosswings. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with some parts being single storey. It is adorned with two large chimneys, each with corniced heads and clay pots, one located on the ridge to the left of center and the other flanking on the right. The windows are modern leaded casements from the 20th century.

The southern entrance front features two single bay gables, each with three-light casements on both floors, flanking a central section that has one four-light window on both floors. This is situated to the right of a 20th-century gabled porch with a wooden entrance door.

Inside, many parts of the timber frame are exposed on the first floor, showcasing curved windbraces. Most of the arched braced collar truss remains over the former solar, though some braces are missing. The interior also includes two large inglenook fireplaces.
