Description

The Old Malt House is a hall house, originally a large dwelling, dating from the early 15th century. It was extended in the late 15th century and subsequently altered and extended in the 19th century and late 20th century. The structure is a combination of timber frame construction with painted rendered surfaces and brick infill, alongside painted brick and extensive false timberwork on the exterior. The building is characterised by its tiled gabled roofs, which vary in height. The original layout comprised two bays by two, but it has evolved into an irregular form with extensions on both sides. The building is two storeys high and features three chimneys with clay pots. Windows are a mix of 20th-century leaded casement windows and sash windows with glazing bars. The north front presents two one-bay gables on the left, each with two-light casement windows. A large extension, set back on the right side, includes two gabled dormers and two-light casement windows below. A lean-to extension on the left features a five-light casement window, while the right side has three sash windows. A 20th-century porch provides the entrance on the east front. Inside, the oldest section, originally two bays, has small roof trusses including a redundant crowm post. The central truss has a large scantling brace serving as a tie, and the end truss features long, straight braces and curved wind braces. A later section, also with two bays, is covered by a queen post roof, with large cambered ties and curved wind braces. A moulded principal beam is present on the ground floor.
