Description

Nuptown House is a hall house, dating to the early 15th century, that has been altered and extended in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of timber frame with painted brick infill, painted Flemish bond, and painted roughcast, with an old tile hipped and half-hipped roof. The original plan comprised a central hall of three framed bays, with a three-bay crosswing to the left and a crosswing to the right, although the crosswings have been significantly altered. The exterior is two storeys in height. There are three large chimneys with clay pots; two are 17th century and one is 18th century. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars and architraves, some of which are moulded. There are 20th-century French casement doors with glazing bars on the garden elevation, and a three-bay centre section to the garden front with French casement doors on the ground floor. Single-bay projecting gables are present on the crosswings. The garden front was the original entrance front, but the main entrance is now at the rear. The interior retains much of the timber frame, with chamfered joists with shield stops to the inserted floor in the central section, and plain joists in the crosswing. Heavy arch braces are visible, tying the beams and wall plates. A large inglenook fireplace is located in the dining room.
