Description
The Moathouse is a hall house situated on a moated site, originally built in the early 15th century and altered in the 16th century, with some parts encased in brick. It underwent further alterations in the 20th century. The structure features a combination of timber framing with painted brick infill at the rear and painted brick elsewhere, topped with an old tile gabled roof.
The building has a plan that includes a two-bay framed former hall and a three-bay crosswing on the northeast, with a 16th-century extension on the southwest. It is two stories tall and has two chimneys at the gable ends and two additional chimneys at the rear, all featuring corniced heads and clay pots. The late 16th-century chimney on the right gable is constructed of brick in English bond and is currently disused. The windows are primarily 19th-century casements.
The entrance front faces southwest and includes three-bay windows with brick dentil eaves. The windows are three-light with segmental heads and lozenge-pattern leaded glazing, while the central window has two lights and is situated below a 20th-century gabled porch. There is an oriel window on the right side at the first floor and a 20th-century plank entrance door.
Inside, the ground floor features large chamfered joists, and there are shutter grooves in the former external wall on the northwest. The former hall has a redundant crown post roof with an arch-braced center truss, and some rafters show signs of soot. One roof truss also has sooted rafters.
