Description

Warfield House is a large country house set in landscaped grounds, originally built in the early 18th century and extended in the 19th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. The house is primarily constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some areas of painted brick, and features low pitched, hipped old tile roofs that are concealed behind parapets.

The building has an irregular plan, which was formerly nearly square, and includes canted bays on the north, east, and south sides. It stands three storeys tall and is adorned with several chimneys that have corniced heads and clay pots. The entrance front, which is irregular, is located on the north side.

On the right side of the entrance front, there is an early 19th-century rounded three-window projection that covers three bays of the original house. This section features a two-storey frontispiece with a single window, flanked by paired, tapered pilasters that support moulded stone cornices. The first-floor windows rise above the cornice, which is broken forward to accommodate them, leading to a brick parapet topped with stone urn finials. The first-floor window has a moulded frame and moulded architrave.

The entrance door consists of eight fielded panels and is set within a Doric doorcase that includes a triglyph frieze and a projecting cornice with mutules, which is broken back in the centre. On the left return, or east front, there are two projecting early 19th-century wings made of painted brick with canted ends, revealing three bays of the original house in between. The windows on the second floor of the older section have moulded frames and gauged brick arches, while the first floor features a Venetian window and a balcony with a balustrade, beneath which are 20th-century French casement doors.

Inside, Warfield House contains some panelling and enriched doors, and the ground floor is equipped with complete window shutters.
