Description

The Anti Air War Memorial, located outside Highbeam House at 581-587 High Road in Woodford Green, was erected in 1935. It features a small stone bomb mounted on a square plinth, which bears inscriptions on all sides. The front reads, "To those who in 1932 upheld the right to use bombing aeroplanes." The left side states, "this monument is raised as a protest against war in the air." The right side notes that it was "originally unveiled by R P Zaphiro, secretary of the Imperial Ethiopian Legation London. Supported by James Ranger, E J A Webster, J Davey, Sylvia Pankhurst. October 20th 1935." The rear inscription indicates that "The site of this monument is the property of Sylvia Pankhurst. Design and work by Eric Benfield." The memorial is enclosed by an iron railing and is listed for its historic value.
