Description

Hart House is an early 19th-century building, dating from 1816, now serving as a hospital. It stands three storeys tall, constructed of stucco, and features a symmetrical arrangement of windows with two sets of two and three sash windows. The central section is recessed and includes a one-storey Ionic portico with six columns, positioned between the wings. There are double bands above the ground floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, with a hipped slate roof. The garden front has a slightly projecting central section topped by a pediment.

Inside, the entrance hall contains a small staircase in the Wyatt style, featuring iron balusters with lead enrichment. There are painted and gilded cornices, which are also found in other areas of the building.

Historically, the original Hart House, known as Harts, was built in 1617 by Sir Richard Handforth, who was the Master of the Wardrobe to James I. Arthur Onslow, the Speaker of the House in the first half of the 18th century, was born here. The property later belonged to the Warner family, including Richard Warner, a noted naturalist who published "Plantae Woodfordiensis" in 1771.
