Description

The United Free Church, located in High Elms, Woodford Green, was built in 1904 by Charles Harrison Townsend. It is constructed of red brick with yellow terracotta dressings and has a tiled roof. The church is laid out in a cruciform plan, featuring a five-bay nave with a clerestory containing thermal windows. There are short transepts and a curved northwest chapel. A projecting porch is located to the south west. The west end has a large round-headed niche which encloses two thermal windows, with a pair of segmental-headed doorways positioned below. Thermal windows are also present in the aisles, transepts, and clerestory, all featuring flush mullions. External flying buttresses are a prominent feature.

Inside, the church has a barrel vaulted ceiling with brick and terracotta transverse arches rising from square piers clad in marble. Semicircular arcade arches and marble cladding to the aisle walls are also noteworthy. A gallery occupies the west end. The building was originally listed at Grade II, and this has since been upgraded to Grade II*, reflecting its group value and architectural importance.
