Description

The Goole Zeppelin Air Raid Memorial is a war memorial built in 1922, made of white marble with Portland stone curbs and a lectern, created by local monumental mason Mr. H O Tasker. It is located in the central circular plot of Goole Cemetery, facing north-west towards the entrance gateway. The memorial marks the six public graves of the victims of the Zeppelin raid, which are surrounded by very low curb stones and laid in slate chippings.

The memorial features a white marble open book on a low Portland stone lectern, raised on a stepped stone plinth. This is placed at the head of the grave within a rectangular enclosure also laid in stone chippings and surrounded by low Portland stone curbs with corner and centre posts. The pages of the memorial bear an inscription in lead letters that reads: "IN MEMORIAM. IN MEMORY OF THE SIXTEEN CITIZENS OF GOOLE, WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN A GERMAN ZEPPELIN RAID ON THIS UNDEFENDED TOWN ON THE 9TH AUGUST, 1915. ETERNAL REST GIVEN UNTO THEM, O LORD." Below this is a list of the names and ages of the deceased, which includes individuals ranging from a 6-year-old girl to a 74-year-old woman.

The upper riser of the plinth originally had an inscription noting that the monument was funded by public subscription, but this has weathered and is now unreadable.
