Description
Victoria Lock and Ouse Lock are two locks located on Aire Street in Goole. Ouse Lock was under construction in 1835 and completed in 1838, with later alterations made by George Leather. Victoria Lock was built in 1888. Ouse Lock is made of ashlar stone and measures approximately 105 by 15 metres. It has a rectangular shape with recesses at the river end for gates, featuring rounded coping above the ashlar lining of the chamber. The timber gates are secured with iron straps. There are three original capstans at the east end and four at the west end, each about 1 metre tall, designed as tapering fluted columns with square bases. This lock was specifically built for steamships and is considered one of the finest examples of its type. Victoria Lock measures approximately 180 by 15 metres, with rounded ashlar coping above the brick lining of the chamber and timber gates also secured with iron straps. The capstans here are plain and columnar.
